As an entry point for a huge number of visitors to the country (through Shannon International Airport), Limerick is a strategic gateway for the exceptional natural beauty of the western coast. Fantastic natural resources such as the awesome Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare, or the breathtaking Ring of Kerry are within striking distance of Limerick, and rank among the natural wonders of the world. Closer again are the beautiful thatched village of Adare and Foynes Flying Boat Museum.
For city breaks too Limerick has a wealth of unique attractions on offer. The Anglo-Norman King John’s Castle was built completed around the year 1200, and while Angela’s Ashes painted a tough picture of Limerick’s later history, more recently the city has benefitted from structural investment and improved amenities. Picturesque walkways along the Shannon lead via the Potato Market to the University of Limerick, home to both the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Irish World Music Centre, and the city is home to several legendary old-style watering holes, including Nancy Blakes, Mickey Martin’s and The White House.
